2008 Isle of Man Gold King Tut 3-pc Set NGC PF69UC
Explore the Secrets of King Tut’s Tomb
In 1922, after decades of searching, archaeologist Howard Carter finally discovered the first hidden steps to the tomb of Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun – better known today as King Tut! Despite being a near-total mystery to historians, Tutankhamun became a worldwide sensation due to the vast array of riches found within his burial chambers, including the famous golden death mask that is so often seen as an iconic symbol Egypt and its fascinating history.
Prior to 2008, the treasures of King Tut had not been exhibited outside of Egypt since the 1970s, when more than eight million people stood in line to get a glimpse at the death mask, the miniature coffins that held Tut’s organs and the golden throne found beneath Tutankhamun’s funerary bed in the antechamber of the tomb. When 2008 came and King Tut’s treasures again went on tour, attendance records were broken in Los Angeles, Chicago, Ft. Lauderdale, Philadelphia and London. And these golden pyramid coins were a part of the celebration!
To commemorate the return of a King Tut exhibit to London for the first time since 1972, the British Pobjoy Mint struck an extremely limited series of pyramid-like triangular gold proofs. Released on behalf of the Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown dependency located in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland, just 999 three-piece sets were ever issued – and two of the coins were available only in this set!
This threesome of golden pyramid coins is the first of its kind. Minted in highly pure 99.99% fine gold, each golden treasure displays one of the famous artifacts unearthed in Tut’s tomb:
- The One-Ounce Gold Crown displays the famous Gold Death Mask – the most renowned of all the artifacts found in the tomb. The mask was fitted on the face of Tut’s mummy where it was found undisturbed by looters. It is currently on display at The Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The coin was limited to a mintage of just 1,998.
- The Half-Ounce Gold 1/2-Crown features a miniature coffin – a representation of the four small gold sarcophagi that held the boy king’s organs. Each was decorated in colored glass and precious stones and were covered with hieroglyphics. Just 999 of these proofs were struck and they were available only in this set.
- The Fifth-Ounce Gold 1/5-Crown shows the Golden Throne, a wooden chair covered in gold leafing and decorated with multi-colored glass and precious stones depicting the daily life of the young pharaoh. Just 999 of these proofs were struck and they were available only in this set.
Each coin in your 2008 Isle of Man Gold King Tut Three-Piece Set has been certified, graded and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in near-perfect Proof-69 Ultra Cameo (PF69UC) condition, a distinction that means your almost-flawless proofs will showcase impressive full strikes and indistinguishable imperfections – well above and beyond the quality of the vast majority of coins in the series. Plus, the entire set comes housed in a golden pyramid-shaped case.
Like Howard Carter’s incredible finds, these coins are historical treasures you have to see for yourself. But unlike Carter’s expedition members who fell victim to the Curse of King Tut, the only curse that will befall you with this discovery would be missing out on adding these coins to your collection. Hurry and secure this hard-to-find set today!
