Low Mintage Five Star General Proofs

Here you have a 2013 Five Star General commemorative Half Dollar struck in San Francisco. Each coin is clad (copper-nickel) in gleaming proof condition with beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. It’s also from an extraordinarily low mintage of just 47,326. The obverse features portraits of Generals Henry “Hap” Arnold, who held the position of General for both the Army and the Air Force and was an aviation pioneer, and Omar Nelson Bradley, a senior officer of the U.S. Army during and after World War II, with the 5-star insignia above their heads. The reverse features the heraldic crest of Fort Leavenworth, the home of the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College.

A Commemorative Coin That Earns Five-Star Rating

The U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College (CGSC) was established in 1881 to train officers in the science and profession of military tactics. Originally established at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas by General William Tecumseh Sherman to train infantry and cavalry officers, the CGSC has grown to encompass four schools of military discipline and produced such distinguished alumni as Omar Bradley, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, George Marshall, George S. Patton Jr., Colin Powell, and H. Norman Schwarzkopf.

The CGSC has had a profound effect on many battles and conflicts throughout the world and been a key to America’s success from World War I and World War II all the way up through today’s global campaigns. To honor the 5-star generals who attended or taught at the CGSC, the San Francisco Mint released this commemorative half dollar in 2013 on the 132nd Anniversary of the institution’s founding.
