The First Gold Half Dollar Ever Issued By the U.S. Mint

On November 22, 1963, the nation reeled when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The following year, the Franklin Half Dollar was replaced by a new image – one celebrating the life of the fallen president.

50 years later, the United States Mint released a series of special Kennedy Half Dollars in 2014 to commemorate the original’s golden anniversary. In addition to the uncirculated, proof and silver half dollars, the Mint also issued – for the FIRST time ever – a gold half dollar struck in three-fourths of an ounce of 24 karat (99.99% pure) gold. Struck by the West Point Mint in stunning high relief, it was also the only special 50th anniversary half dollar to feature the 1964 & 2014 dual dates. As one would expect, these Gold Kennedy Half Dollars saw heavy demand from the moment they were released, nearly selling out at the mint.

We thought we may never come across these gold coins again, but luck was with us when we attended the 2019 American Numismatic Association (ANA) World’s Fair of Money show in Chicago where we were able to secure a number of these 50th Anniversary Kennedy Gold Half Dollars. Not only were able to procure some of these coins, bur each has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs have ZERO imperfections – showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended!

In addition, NGC has also certified that these Gold Kennedy Half Dollars to be First Day of Issue (FDI) coins, meaning they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date. Collectors seek out these coins because they are produced with new dies and have sharper strikes and deeper mirrors than those that are struck later. Each coin also features a highly desired location designation (Philadelphia) where it was purchased on the first day of the series release.

Each coin will come sonically sealed in an acrylic holder and encapsulated with a label personally signed by the legendary John M. Mercanti, the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver! A giant in the numismatic world, Mercanti has produced more coin and medal designs than any person in U.S. Mint history. Plus, each coin comes in a deluxe presentation case along with a first-year 1964-P Kennedy Half Dollar in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.

Just 73,772 of these Kennedy Gold Half Dollars were ever struck. Compared to the millions of Kennedy Half Dollars that have been struck over the years, this is a miniscule amount. No American coin collection is complete without one of these coins. But since we have only two such coins left in our vault; you’ll need to act fast to be one of the lucky few who can claim ownership of one of these scarce coins.
