2015 Cook Islands 10 Dollar 2-oz Silver Flinders Street Station Antique
Looking for a Unique Vision of an Australian Icon? Meet Us Under the Clocks!
There are certain structures that undeniably tell you where you are. Eiffel Tower? France. Empire State Building? New York. For the citizens and visitors of Australia’s second largest city, a beautifully weathered copper dome towering over a row of clocks embedded in a French Renaissance-style building lets you know exactly where you are -- the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets in Melbourne. This is the Flinders Street railway station.
For more than a century, this building has housed the heart of Melbourne transit by rail and by foot. It’s the busiest railway station not just in Australia but of the entire southern hemisphere. Within its ubiquitous yellow walls resides a rich history full of both change and tradition -- best exemplified in the departure time clocks gracing its main entrance. For decades, the clocks were manually readjusted hundreds of times a day to signal when the next trains would depart. In 1983, they were slated to be replaced by digital displays -- a decision which lasted an entire day before being reversed due to a furious public! The clocks are turned electronically now, but they still remain as an integral part of the city’s most beloved landmark. In fact, ask anyone in the city to "meet you under the clocks" and they’ll know exactly where to find you!
Now, thanks to the Melbourne Mint, the Flinders Street station is immortalized in this 2015 Two-Ounce Flinders Street Station coin. Struck in two ounces of 99.9% pure silver, the main entrance of the famous station is lovingly recreated on a 50 millimeter canvas. Alongside the station’s signature façade, you’ll find the dome has been inlaid with actual copper! It’s a state-of-the-art effect that emphasizes the intricate details of the entire side! Since this coin is official legal tender for the Cook Islands, you’ll find a portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by her name, the country and denomination, all inside a beautiful circular design. Finally, the coin possesses a beautiful antique finish that underlines the longevity of this adored symbol.
Your coin will come to you in a crafted timber case along with a numbered certificate of authenticity. We were able to secure a number of these coins out of a limited mintage of 999, but once the word gets out about this gorgeous re-creation, we doubt these will stay in our vaults for very long. A perfect addition to any global landmark collection or the ideal gift for the Melburnian in your life, you shouldn’t miss the train on this one! Order yours before your time is up!
