2016 30 Gram Silver Panda Two Coin Mint Set Perfect-Graded NGC MS70
This 2016 30 Gram Silver Panda Mint Set features two silver Pandas, one struck at the Shenzhen and the other at the Shanghai Mint in China. Each set is match graded in Mint State-70 (MS70), and the label references which mint struck the coin. The reverse features a panda climbing a tree, along with the weight, fineness, and legal tender denomination of 10 Yuan. The obverse displays the traditional Temple of Heaven within a circle and the date 2016. Each coin has been certified as Early Releases and graded in perfect MS70 condition by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation).
This is the first time ever that silver Pandas have been certified with which Mint they were struck at right on the label. Just like the U.S. Mint has multiple branches (Denver, West Point, Philadelphia, etc.), the China Mint also strikes coins in different mint locations. Silver Pandas through the years have been struck at Shanghai, Shenzhen and Shenyang. Since there is no mintmark for the location generally used on BU Pandas, there is no way to tell which mint they came from by looking at them. One of our numismatists discovered labeling inside of the mint boxes which said the location they were struck at. We were able to send sealed boxes to NGC, so they could pedigree the coins with their location.
These have been certified and match graded as Early Releases. This means these are some of the first coins off the presses. Only 1,635 MS70 match graded sets with the early releases designation can ever be assembled.
2016 begins a bold new era for panda coins. The old system of troy ounces has been replaced by the metric system of grams, the standard system of weights used in the People's Republic of China. For the first time, the full range of gold and silver pandas will be issued in metric weights. The 2016 coins will show the denomination, weight, and purity. For collectors, this new metric weight change should prove quite exciting, as these new types are being added to the panda coin world. The 30g silver coin is a first for the Panda series.
