A 2016 One Ounce Silver "Plain Fields" Britannia Error Coin Surfaces!

Around the world, many countries issue one-ounce silver coins similar to our own Silver Eagle. In England, that coin is the Silver Britannia, containing one-ounce of 99.9% silver. And, like our Silver Eagle, a smaller number of Britannias are minted each year in a collector's edition.

This 2016 Silver Britannia example is certified Mint State-69 Deep Proof Like (MS69 DPL) and First Releases (FR) by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). In addition, it has two other important features that, when put together, set this coin apart from almost all other 2016 Britannia Proofs! Not only does this coin have the special "Plain Fields" designation, it is also contains an error that very few other 2016 Britannia Proofs can claim!

The Royal Mint releases their traditional Silver Britannia bullion coins with a textured field, giving the background a coarser look and feel. The mintage for these coins is open throughout the year, with an official production total declared at year's end. However, in 2015, Royal Mint started releasing an annual limited edition mintage of one-ounce silver "Plain Fields" Britannias as part of the series. The 2016 "Plain Fields" Britannia mintage is limited to only 10,000 worldwide.

Out of those 10,000, we sent 1,000 coins to be graded at NGC. As they were graded, the professionals at NGC noticed that several had an error below the "UN" in the word "POUND" on the Britannia's obverse. During striking, a foreign object became stuck on the die, resulting in a noticeable error. In all, NGC found 49 coins with this particular error, certifying each as "Obverse Struck Thru."
