2016 was a banner year for United States coins, with one of the biggest events being the release of the year's 30th Anniversary Silver Eagle Proofs. Featuring incused lettering on a smooth edge for the first (and, most likely, only) time ever on a Silver Eagle, collectors waited nearly nine months to finally get their hands on these fantastic proofs. Fortunately, the U.S. Mint isn't stopping there! For only the ninth time since 2006, the mint is producing a limited amount of Uncirculated/Burnished Silver Eagles. To begin, these 2016 Silver Eagles have the same design as those that came before it -- Adolph A. Weinman's gorgeous Lady Liberty paired with John Mercanti's heraldic eagle. But these coins inhabit a unique middle ground. Unlike Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) bullion Silver Eagles, these have a "W" mintmark for the West Point Mint and are minted using specially burnished planchets. This special polishing gives these coins more of a matte finish than either BU or Proof Silver Eagles. Plus, unlike their bullion brethren, these 2016 Silver Eagles will have the year's exclusive smooth edge, engraved with the inscription "30th ANNIVERSARY" right below Liberty's feet.
