The first and only gold quarter ever struck, celebrating a century-old design!

In 1916, after nearly a quarter-century of what were considered uninspired designs, it was time for a change in its coinage. World War I was raging in Europe, and America teetered on the brink of war itself. Having authorized the use of classical motifs for gold coin designs nine years earlier, President Theodore Roosevelt now wanted the smaller denomination silver coinage to be updated as well. Hermon Atkins MacNeil’s obverse design won a nationwide competition, depicting Lady Liberty in a style reminiscent of ancient Greek sculpture. Too reminiscent, it seemed, as the original design was changed after only two years of production, to cover up Lady Liberty’s bare breast. After that slight hiccup, the series continued through 1930, with nearly 226 million coins struck.

Though the design was slightly modified, the imagery is iconic, and a hundred years later, the US Mint honored the Standing Liberty Quarter with the creation of a gold quarter—the only gold quarter ever struck. To add to its luster, your 2016-W Gold Standing Liberty Quarter includes a label signed by the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti. It’s available now at GovMint.com.

All that glitters is 99.99% pure gold

Lustrous, brilliantly detailed and beautifully struck, the 2016-W Gold Standing Liberty Quarter is minted in 99.99% pure gold. It weighs 7.776 grams and is 22 mm in diameter.

  • A FIRST-AND-ONLY RELEASE-- This coin offers a series of rare points: it’s the only gold quarter ever struck by the US Mint, and one of the only Standing Liberty Quarters struck at the West Point Mint. The obverse of your 2016-W Gold Standing Liberty Quarter features Lady Liberty raising her shield aloft with her left arm, and carrying an olive branch in her right hand. She steps through an opening in a wall that’s inscribed with "IN GOD WE TRUST" and lined with thirteen stars. Additional inscriptions on the obverse include "LIBERTY," "AU 24K," "1/4 OZ." and the date "2016." The coin’s reverse depicts an eagle flying high, surrounded by thirteen stars. Also on the reverse are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
  • A SCANDAL IN 1916, NOW HONORED TODAY-- In 1916 and 1917, the original Hermon Atkins MacNeil design of the Standing Liberty Quarter drew harsh censure. In subsequent mintages of the coin, Lady Liberty was "covered up" with a blouse of chain mail, a design that was maintained through the coin series’ end in 1930.
  • SIGNED BY JOHN MERCANTI -- Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, has hand-signed the label of your the 2016-W Gold Standing Liberty Quarter. The coin has also earned the grade of near perfect SP69 condition by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS.) A grading of SP indicates the coin is a Specimen, a hybrid between Mint State and Proof.

A first-and-only gold quarter, with packaging signed by John Mercanti, is a treasure by any standards…and not surprisingly, they’re going fast. Get yours today from GovMint.com!
