To celebrate the 100^th anniversary of the National Park Service a 12-ft. tall monumental bronze cast of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' sculpture Abraham Lincoln: The Man was unveiled at the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site. "The Standing Lincoln is in many ways the reason we have a National Park in Cornish today," said Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site Superintendent Rick Kendall. "Saint-Gaudens moved to Cornish specifically to work on this piece, and found a local model to pose for the sculpture.”

A Great Admirer of Lincoln
As a youngster, Augustus had watched as Lincoln’s travelcade moved through New York on his way to Washington, DC, for his inauguration as President of the United States, and, after his assassination, he had witnessed Lincolns’ body lying in state in city hall. The 1884 commission for the “Standing Lincoln” held great meaning for Saint-Gaudens. In 1887, the “Standing Lincoln” was installed in Chicago’s Lincoln Park and has become the most popular monument of Abraham Lincoln.

The obverse depicts a bust of Abraham Lincoln created by the 12^th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti. The bust of Lincoln rises off the background in a high relief look.
