2017-D Sacagawea Dollar BU 100-Coin Bag
A Monumental Task, a Significant Achievement, a Gorgeous Commemoration!
From the first hieroglyphs to the Gutenberg Bible to today's social media, it's absolutely certain -- the written word has tremendous power. The ability to read and write makes it easy to not only record our thoughts, stories and opinions, but to bring them to others as well. This is all part and parcel with the English language today, but for languages that are based on speech alone, a reliance on memory and recitation means that words can only survive as long as the people that know them. In the early 1800s, the people of the Cherokee Nation were facing this exact problem, and it took the efforts of Sequoyah, a Tennessee silversmith, to bring posterity to their language.
Sequoyah began to create a written Cherokee language using letters to assemble words, just like English. However, that approach didn't quite fit the vocabulary. Through experimentation, he discovered that using symbols to represent syllables worked perfectly. Along with his daughter, he identified the syllabic sounds used by the Cherokee and assigned each of them to different letters and symbols. In 1821, he finished his 86-character Cherokee Syllabary, and after a few successful initial communications between tribes, the new method of writing caught on. Today, the syllabary is credited with recording and preserving Cherokee culture and tradition, keeping it alive for generations to come.
Today, Sequoyah's amazing accomplishment is celebrated in the 2017 edition of the Native American Dollar Series. And now, you can own a 100-piece bag of these landmark coins! Each legal tender U.S. dollar coin features the familiar and iconic design of Sacagawea, the famous guide to Lewis and Clark, on the obverse. Flip the coin over, and you'll discover Sequoyah literally signing his name, "Sequoyah from Cherokee Nation," in the Cherokee language. Each coin is in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, and will come to you in original mint packaging of a stitched cloth bag. Even better, all of your coins will have been produced at the Denver Mint, with each bearing the "D" mintmark.
This ninth entry in the Native American Dollar series, like the others, is a one-year-only design. Whether you're a history buff, a written language fan, a collector of Native American art, or a numismatic fanatic, these coins are collection essentials. Don't wait -- order yours now!
