2017 Great Britain 100 Pound Gold Queen's Beasts The Griffin Uncirculated
This Protector of Queen Elizabeth II is Ready to Report for Duty!
When you're about to be crowned as the Queen of England at the age of 27, it helps to have a bit of protection! That's why the British Ministry of Works commissioned sculptor James Woodford RA to create a series of 10 heraldic beasts, each symbolizing a different chapter of the Queen's genealogy, for Her Majesty's coronation ceremony on June 2, 1953. First sculpted in plaster, the Queen's Beasts have had several homes since their debut, now residing in the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec. However, James Woodford RA also sculpted replicas of the beasts in Portland stone that now sit outside the Kew Gardens.
Now, the Royal Mint is introducing the second design in the popular Queen's Beasts bullion coin series -- the Griffin of Edward III! Following the first design featuring the Lion of England, this coin showcases an intricate depiction of a creature that symbolizes courage and strength along with guardianship, vigilance, swiftness and keen vision. The Griffin was a feature of Edward III's private seal and would come to embody his successful reign. The accomplished, prolific and popular designer Jody Clark has brilliantly recreated the Griffin for this gold bullion coin, giving it lifelike detail as it sits on a regal crest over a richly designed field. In addition, Jody Clark designed the coin's obverse -- the latest definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that has been used on all coins from the UK since 2015.
Your gorgeous 2017 Queen's Beast Griffin comes minted in one ounce of 99.99% pure gold, and is legal tender 100 Pounds Sterling.
