2017 Great Britain Gold Sovereign Set NGC Gem Proof First Struck 5pc
2017 Gold Sovereign Proof Sets—One of First 150 Struck!
In general, a coin’s design will often see an update, or total replacement, after 30 or 50 years. But not Great Britain’s Gold Sovereign! First issued in 1817 as a replacement for the guinea, its design has barely changed. The obverse continues to depict whichever king or queen is in power at the time, and the reverse still features the exact same image of St. George slaying the dragon that first graced the coin 200 years ago. This consistency is a widely recognized sign of the Sovereign’s security and longevity.
In its centuries of existence, there has been one major change to the Sovereign’s classic reverse. Originally, it depicted a belt design taken from The Most Noble Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. It was too difficult to strike, though, and was soon replaced by a simpler border design.
Of course, minting technology has increased dramatically in the last 200 years, and so for one year only, The Royal Mint is celebrating the 200th anniversary of this world-famous coin by returning to the original 1817 design, and you can get it struck in multiple weights with this shimmering five-coin proof set.
Included in the set are the 2017 £5 (five pound), £2 (two pound) and £1 (one pound) Gold Sovereign Proofs, as well as the 2017 Half-Sovereign and Quarter-Sovereign Proofs. All are struck to a beautiful proof finish in 22 karat gold, just like the very first Sovereign 200 years ago.
These 2017 Gold Sovereign Proof Sets are available certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) in Gem Proof condition, all certified as being One of First 150 Struck, ensuring the crispest detail possible. Join the celebration and order now!
