The name Cherokee means “speakers of another language” and the Cherokee called themselves the Ani-Yunwiya, meaning “principal people.” They fought with the French during the French and Indian war and sided with the British during the American Revolution. The Cherokee lost much of their land following these conflicts. They were ultimately forced from what little land they had left in 1838 and relocated to the state of Oklahoma on a march that has since been referred to as “The Trail of Tears” during which 4,000 Cherokee people died during the tortuous journey.
