The Mohawk people earned the name of Keepers of the Eastern Door within the Iroquois League because they guarded the league from invasions of tribes from New England and lower New York. They once lived on territory that ranged from west of the Hudson River to the St. Lawrence River, eastern Ontario, and southern Quebec. Significant populations survive today in Quebec and New York, with nearly 24,000 in the former and a little over 5,600 in the latter.
