2018 Great Britain 10 Pence 6.5 Gram Silver Great British Hunt L - Loch Ness Monster Proof
“L” is for Loch Ness Monster – The Latest Silver Proof in the Great British Coin Hunt Series!
Inspired by the success of America’s 50 State Quarters Program, the British Royal Mint launched its own coin project. The theme is the “Great British Coin Hunt” and features a 26-coin set that covers everything British from A to Z. Launched in March of 2018, the demand for these coins was so intense that it crashed the Royal Mint’s web site on the very first day of release!
When you feast your eyes on the 26 designs you’ll understand why British collectors went wild. There is a different design for every letter of the alphabet on the nation’s 10-pence coins. At 24.5 mm in diameter, the 10-pence coin is slightly larger than a U.S. quarter and they circulate widely throughout the United Kingdom. The goal of the series is for people to “hunt” through their pocket change and discover al the unique designs.
In addition to the circulating coinage, the Royal Mint is also issuing a limited edition of proofs struck in British sterling silver. We’re in the process of securing as many of the silver proofs as we can and making them available to GovMint customers. The coin available here is “L” for Loch Ness Monster. The reverse of the coin features the famous Loch Ness Monster swimming above the waters’ of Loch Ness with the letter “L” encircled by Nessie’s tail.
Is it real or is it mythical? Scotland’s famous Loch Ness Monster has been captivating the imaginations of monster hunters since the 6th century. It wasn’t until 1871, however, when an object resembling a log was seen wriggling and churning in the water. The story wasn’t reported until 1934 at which time popular interest in the “monster” exploded. Like Bigfoot and the Abominable Snowman, the Loch Ness Monster is a paranormal creature that is often talked about, but seldom seen. Those who claim to have seen “Nessie” describe the creature as being very large with a long neck and one or more humps. Several scientific expeditions have attempted to find the creature but thus far Nessie has thwarted all attempts at its discovery or capture.
Fans of the Loch Ness Monster as well as coin collectors are going crazy for this coin. But you don’t have to travel to Scotland to get one and you don’t need to have a boat loaded with sonar equipment. Just add it to your cart!
