“U” is for Union Flag – The Latest Silver Proof in the Great British Coin Hunt Series!

Inspired by the success of America’s 50 State Quarters Program, the British Royal Mint launched its own coin project. The theme is the “Great British Coin Hunt” and features a 26-coin set that covers everything British from A to Z. Launched in March of 2018, the demand for these coins was so intense that it crashed the Royal Mint’s web site on the very first day of release!

When you feast your eyes on the 26 designs you’ll understand why British collectors went wild. There is a different design for every letter of the alphabet on the nation’s 10-pence coins. At 24.5 mm in diameter, the 10-pence coin is slightly larger than a U.S. quarter and they circulate widely throughout the United Kingdom. The goal of the series is for people to “hunt” through their pocket change and discover al the unique designs.

In addition to the circulating coinage, the Royal Mint is also issuing a limited edition of proofs struck in British sterling silver. We’re in the process of securing as many of the silver proofs as we can and making them available to GovMint customers. The coin available here is “U” for the Union Flag. The reverse of the coin features a close-up detail of a portion of Great Britain’s iconic “Union Jack” flag with the letter “U” superimposed over the design.

Great Britain’s iconic Union Flag combines the three national flags of England, Scotland and Ireland. It consists of the red cross of Saint George, the white saltire of Saint Andrew and the red saltire of Saint Patrick. The three colors were unified in one flag in 1801 to create the Union Flag flown proudly today. Great Britain’s flag became known as the “Union Jack” over a period of decades. The word “jack” meant something small, and many of the flags flown from British naval vessels were small flags and were simply called “Jacks.” After years of debate, Parliament finally settled the issue in 1908 when it stated, “The Union Jack should be regarded as the National Flag.”
