On January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy took the Presidential Oath of Office, becoming the first Roman Catholic ever to hold the position. Catholics throughout the country rejoiced, seeing his election as a sign of hope in a country not far removed from “No Irish Need Apply” signs and other forms of discrimination against Catholics in general and the Irish in particular. Partly because of that but also because of the hopeful attitude that he conveyed in his public persona, Kennedy’s election was seen as a sign of hope even to many of his political opponents.
