2018-PD Kennedy Half Dollar Bag of 200 Coins
Commemorating a Great and Terrible Time in American History
On January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy took the Presidential Oath of Office, becoming the first Roman Catholic ever to hold the position. Catholics throughout the country rejoiced, seeing his election as a sign of hope in a country not far removed from “No Irish Need Apply” signs and other forms of discrimination against Catholics in general and the Irish in particular. Partly because of that but also because of the hopeful attitude that he conveyed in his public persona, Kennedy’s election was seen as a sign of hope even to many of his political opponents. So optimistic was the country as a whole that his term has earned the nickname “Camelot.”
Less than three years later, America suffered a loss that was felt so deeply by everyone – Republican, Democrat, and independent – across the country that those who lived through it invariably remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. President Kennedy was shot while in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas at 12:30 p.m. on November 22, 1963. The nation entered a period of mourning not comparable to anything for another twenty-three years, when the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart shortly after liftoff. A little more than a month after President Kennedy’s death, Congress authorized a half dollar coin to be minted in his honor. That coin has been minted since, albeit no longer in silver, and this 2018 Kennedy Half Dollar P & D 200 Coin Bag consists of coins that a part of the latest issue in that series.
- HONORING AN AMERICAN ICON – These 2018 Kennedy half dollar coins honor a president who brought Americans together in a way that few others have. So powerfully were people’s connections to him that this tribute to his life continues more than half a century later.
- TWO ICONIC DESIGNS – The Kennedy half dollar, like the President for whom it is named, has become an American icon. On the obverse is Gilroy Roberts’s left-side portrait of President Kennedy, while Frank Gasparro’s reverse features a modified Presidential Seal.
- AMERICAN LEGAL TENDER -- Each 2018 Kennedy Half Dollar is fifty cents legal tender in the United States.
- P & D MIINT MARKS – This bag consists of 200 coins, one hundred from the Philadelphia Mint and one hundred from Denver Mint. All of the coins have mint marks, the former with “P” and the latter with “D.”
While President Kennedy’s political allies and opponents have spoken extremely highly of his virtues for more than half a century, his death continues to inspire intrigue and mistrust. Even though he was killed in a most public fashion, official stories of the assassination continue to spur doubt and debate. In fact, many say that the Warren Report, the official government account of what happened, created more questions than it answered. From the romantization of his life to the intrigue surrounding his death, President Kenned continues to be looked upon as one of the most intriguing figures of the 20th century. This bag of 200 Kennedy Half Dollars continues to keep his legacy alive and give collectors the chance to be a part of it. Share in this story of an American icon by ordering your bag today!
