The HMS Endeavor set sail in August of 1768 on a nearly three-year voyage. It was the first ship to reach the east coast of Australia. Fitted as a research vessel, Cook and his crew eventually threw Endeavour's cannons overboard after running aground on the Great Barrier Reef. Despite playing such a pivotal role in an epic expedition, Endeavour came to a sad, lonely end. The British Royal Navy sold her off in 1775 and she was scuttled in the 1778 blockade of Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay during the American Revolution. To this day, her wreck has never been precisely located. Her name lives on, however, as the U.S. Space Shuttle Endeavour is named after the ship.
