The U.S. Mint’s Second American Innovation™ Release for 2019

Americans love inventors and innovations that make life easier. To celebrate the American spirit of innovation, the U.S. Mint kicked off a brand-new one-dollar coin series that has captured the fancy of coin collectors everywhere!

The series was launched in 2018 with a single coin paying tribute to the first U.S. patent. Beginning in 2019, four one-year-only Innovation Dollars were released each year bearing different reverses. The coins in the multi-year series will be designed and minted to honor significant American innovation and pioneering efforts of individuals or groups in each of the 50 States, District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. It will conclude in 2032.

Here’s your chance to get the second coin of 2019, the Pennsylvania Dollar. This stunning coin honors the creation of the polio vaccine in fabulous Reverse Proof condition! Struck with exquisite precision by the San Francisco Mint, this Reverse Proof coin is the opposite of a standard Proof in that it features a frosted background with design elements polished to a mirror-like finish. Each coin will also come shipped in its original government packaging consisting of a colorful four-panel packet that includes the coin’s Certificate of Authenticity.

The reverse design features a silhouette of a microscope along with three levels of magnification to symbolize the extensive research conducted to develop a cure for polio. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “POLIO VACCINE,” “1953,” and “PENNSYLVANIA.” The Pennsylvania coin pays tribute to the work Dr. Jonas Salk, who along with his team at the University of Pittsburgh, developed the polio vaccine in the early 1950s. The coin’s obverse features a common design that will be used throughout the series. It depicts the Statue of Liberty along with a small privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation. In addition, like the other coins issued in 2019, the Pennsylvania Dollar features the incused edge inscriptions: “2019,” “S” mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
