The U.S. Mint’s First American Innovation™ Release for 2019

Americans love inventors and innovations that make life easier. From the cotton gin to automobiles to the internet, the spirit of American innovation has been a constant theme throughout our nation’s history. To celebrate the American spirit of innovation, the U.S. Mint kicked off a brand-new one-dollar coin series that has captured the fancy of coin collectors everywhere!

The series was kicked off in 2018 with a single coin paying tribute to the first U.S. patent. Beginning in 2019, four one-year-only Innovation Dollars will be released each year bearing different reverses. In addition, NGC has certified that these Innovation Dollars are First Releases (FR) coins, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository within the first 30 days of their release. Each will also come sonically sealed in an acrylic holder and encapsulated with an exclusive Innovation label.

The reverse design features a silhouette of Annie Jump Cannon against the night sky, with a number of stars visible. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ANNIE JUMP CANNON,” “CLASSIFYING THE STARS,” and “DELAWARE.” Annie Jump Cannon is remembered for discovering a system for classifying the stars in 1901 – a system that is still being used today! The coin’s obverse features a common design that will be used throughout the series. It depicts the Statue of Liberty along with a small privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation. In addition, like the other coins issued in 2019, the Delaware Dollar features the incused edge inscriptions: “2019,” “S” mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
