When the first Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle coins were released, history was made. Never before had a former U.S. Chief Engraver partnered with a world mint to create a brand-new legal-tender coin. And it wasn't just any former U.S. Chief Engraver, but the legendary John Mercanti, designer of the famous American Eagle Silver Dollar reverse and the man who has designed more coins and medals than any other U.S. Chief Engraver in history.
Since the series' introduction, three different Wedge-Tailed Eagle designs have been issued by the world-famous Perth Mint. 2019 marks both the sixth anniversary of this groundbreaking series, as well as the release of the fourth Mercanti-designed Wedge-Tailed Eagle reverse.
New, One-Year-Only Design
As with last year's sold-out release, the 2019 design will be a one-year-only issue, featuring Australia’s largest bird of prey in flight, wings spread and talons forward, as though closing in on its prey.
Struck in Five Ounces of Gold & Silver
Each Wedge-Tailed Eagle Proof is official Australian legal tender, struck in five Troy ounces of 99.99% pure gold or silver.
High Relief Proof Condition
Both of these coins were minted in Proof condition, with frosted devices and mirrored fields. Better yet, they’ve also been struck in High Relief, with concave fields that allow the frosted designs to sit even higher off of the mirrored fields for an extreme level of contrast.
Exclusive Hand-Signed Labels
A select number of each limited mintage has been graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and sealed in protective display holders. Each of these holders features an exclusive label hand-signed by John Mercanti, 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and the designer of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle series.
