Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of NASA’s “Successful Failure”

When it blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 was to be the third manned mission to the moon. But just two days later the mission was aborted after a service module oxygen tank ruptured. Still, it was classified as a “successful failure” because of the ingenuity of both the crew in space and the scientists and technicians at NASA’s Mission Control to safely bring astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise back home.

Now you can own an authentic piece of that Successful Failure with an exclusive limited-edition reproduction of the Apollo 13 Robins Medal. Starting with Apollo 7, the Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts began working with one or more astronauts from each mission to design and strike medallions that would travel aboard their flights into space. Paid for by the crews and available for purchase only by NASA astronauts and members of the Astronaut Flight Office (AFO) support crew, these sterling silver mementos usually had very limited mintages of only 100 to 450 medals per mission. Today, these prized medals sell for tens of thousands of dollars at auction.

Thanks to GovMint’s standing in the numismatic world, we were able create a commemorative medal modeled after an original Robbins Medal owned by Apollo 13 command module pilot Jack Swigert. Each medal features the same design as the Apollo 13 Robbins Medal, along with dual dates of 1970 and 2020 that commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission when the courage and skill of NASA turned disaster into success.

Not only was this commemorative struck in two full ounces of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, but as part of the antiquing process, each medal was coated with authentic space-flown material. The obverse, struck in Ultra-High Relief, is the official Apollo 13 logo designed by mission commander Jim Lovell. It features the three horses of the sun god Apollo circling the moon. The Latin inscription reads: “From the Moon, Knowledge.” The reverse includes the names of all three astronauts on the mission, the mission’s launch date, and the mission’s return date.

In addition, each 2020 Two-Ounce Silver Apollo 13 Robbins Medal Commemorative available in this offer has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in flawless Mint State-70 (MS70) condition. An MS70 certification is a distinction that means these perfectly-graded medals will have ZERO imperfections – showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended.

These Apollo 13 Robbin Medal Commemoratives will come sealed in acrylic holders and encapsulated with labels that feature a portrait of Jim Lovell. In addition, each will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a storycard on the Apollo 13 mission. Just 1,000 of these spectacular commemoratives will ever be struck, however, so that time to secure one is now while you still can!
