Australia’s First — And Most Valuable — Gold Coin Returns as a Bi-Metal Restrike

Created during Australia’s own Gold Rush, the 1852 Adelaide Gold Paid is a national treasure. It was the first gold coin struck in Australia and remains the nation’s most valuable gold coin. Just 50 original Type I Adelaide Pounds are believed to exist, with any example fetching more than $100,000 at auction.

To honor their nation’s most famous gold coin, the skilled artisans at Australia’s prestigious Perth Mint have struck the nation’s first legal-tender bi-metal Adelaide Pound. As two of the original coins reside within the Smithsonian’s National Numismatic Collection, the famous institution has agreed to lend its name to this historic issue, making it the first Smithsonian coin denominated by a major sovereign government.

This Australian $75 legal-tender coin features the original design of the 1852 Adelaide Pound struck in three quarters of an ounce of 91.67% fine (22 karat) gold, surrounded by a ring of three quarters of an ounce of 99.99% fine silver. The outer silver ring features the modern date and denomination.

This 2020 Bimetal Adelaide Pound Proof has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means your perfectly-graded proof will have ZERO imperfections — showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has certified that this proof is a First Day of Issue (FDI) coin, meaning it was received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date. It will also come sonically sealed in an acrylic holder with an exclusive label that shows Australia’s famous Sydney Opera House.

Just 300 of these historic bi-metal restrikes have been authorized — and even fewer have been certified by NGC as being perfect FDI releases! Plus, each coin available here will come in a custom display case from the Perth Mint and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. These coins will note last long, so order yours now!
