2020 Burnished American Gold Eagle

The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin series issued by the United States Mint. The proof and bullion coins in the series are issued in four sizes. The burnished American Gold Eagle was initially struck in the four sizes in 2006-2008. The dimensions are the 1 oz, ½ oz, the ¼ oz, and the 1/10 oz. The burnished version is only struck in the 1 oz version at this time. The coins are struck at the West Point Branch of the Mint and feature the sought after “W” mint mark. Each coin contains the 1 oz. of gold bullion in a 91.67% pure gold planchet.

The 2020 issue boasts a limited mintage of 7,000 pieces and marks the final time the Family of Eagles reverse design, which has appeared on the series since its debut, will appear on a Burnished American Gold Eagle.

Iconic Burnished American Gold Eagle Design

The American Gold Eagle series has a remarkable background. The well-known obverse was designed in 1907 by the pre-eminent artist of the day, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The obverse features a full-length Liberty design taken from the U.S. $20 “Double Eagle” gold coin issued for circulation from 1907 until 1933. A windswept Liberty is shown holding the Torch of Enlightenment overhead and the olive branch of Peace at her side.

The reverse design was an original one designed for the American Gold Eagle series. Miley Busiek (now known as Miley Tucker-Frost) designed a reverse entitled the “Family of Eagles.” This image features a male bald eagle as he is landing in his nest. The nest contains his mate and young.

2020 marks the final year that Miley Busiek's original Family of Eagles design will appear on a Burnished American Gold Eagle! A new reverse design will debut on the American Gold Eagle series in 2021.

Stunning Frosted Specimen Finish

The Burnished or Uncirculated finish on the American Gold Eagle coin series is characterized by frosty appearance over the entire coin. The fields and the raised design details have a uniform frostiness. This high-quality Numismatic finish is achieved through a combination of specialized metal-on-metal polishing of the planchet and specialized preparation and polishing of the dies.
