2020 Canada $10 2-oz Silver Canadian Goose BU
A Silver Commemorative That Will Give You Goose Bumps
To celebrate Canada’s centennial in 1967, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a unique set of coins with exquisite animal designs by acclaimed and talented artist Alex Colville. Perhaps the most celebrated of those coins was the famous Canadian Goose Centennial Commemorative Silver Dollar. In 2020, to pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of Colville’s birth, the Mint turned to that iconic silver dollar and revamped the design for a new coin that’s sure to give you happy case of goose bumps!
Struck in two ounces of highly pure 99.99% silver, the legal-tender $10 commemorative is literally a new twist on the classic design. Whereas the 1967 dollar has the goose flying east-to-west, the 2020 edition has it pointed towards 3 o’ clock flying west-to-east. The inscriptions are different, too. Instead of a 1867-1967 dual date, the 2020 coin features the silver weight and purity. The revamped coin also features the latest in high-tech security features, including a mini Maple Leaf engraved on the reverse below the goose. The biggest design change, however, is that the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse is no longer a young queen, but rather the updated “mature” effigy by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt that depicts Her Majesty without a crown.
Born in Toronto in 1920, Colville received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick in 1942 before enlisting for service in World War II. While serving in Canada’s 3rd Infantry Division, he rose to the rank of lieutenant and continued to paint as time allowed. Colville’s unique talents weren’t recognized until 1944 when he was formerly made a war artist. His career flourished following the war. In fact, one his most recognized paintings, 1967’s “Pacific” – a piece that shows a man leaning against a doorway looking out to sea while a pistol rests ominously on a table in the foreground – inspired a memorable scene in the 1995 film Heat with actor Robert De Niro.
