Here’s A Multi-Finish Coin Set You’ll Really Cari-Bout!
The United States Washington Quarter is one of the most popular coins in the world – but it’s not the only 25-cent piece that circulates in North America. Our neighbors in Canada also have a quarter, but instead of a Founding Father or a politician, it features a caribou, one of the largest members of the deer family. Often mistaken for a moose even by Canadians, the caribou has been the star of the Canadian quarter since 1937. And now the Caribou Quarter is ready to teach us a thing or two – or five – about the different types of finishes used on coins with this Numis-Tastic Multi-Finish Quarter Five-Piece Set.
This quintuple set is as informative as it is fun. Each piece is a 2020-dated nickel-plated steel Canadian Caribou Quarter and features the same caribou design. The difference is that each coin has a different finish. According to Royal Canadian Mint officials, the Caribou Quarter was chosen for its instantly recognizable design so that the attention of people looking at the set would be drawn to the different finishes instead of the image.
The coins all come mounted on official government packaging from the Royal Canadian Mint consisting of a sturdy carboard folder that identifies each finish in both English and French. It’s also the first time Canada has released these five coin finishes together in one set! The finishes are:
BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED (BU) – Struck to a higher standard than bullion or circulating coins, these beauties have a “hot off the press” look with crisp, razor-sharp designs.
PROOF – The sharpness and detail of a proof coin is unrivalled. These coins are crafted from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
MATTE PROOF – This is a satin version of a Proof finish. The coin is not as reflective as a regular proof thus giving it the appearance of it being slightly more aged than its proof counterpart.
REVERSE PROOF – The opposite of a regular proof, this coin has mirror-like details rising over beautifully frosted fields. This finish has the effect of focusing one’s attention on the subject like light shining on the face of a portrait.
SPECIMEN – Not quite a proof coin, a specimen is produced to a high standard and not meant for circulation. It’s been struck up to two times against a matte background in order to achieve maximum visual impact.
