This coin marks the third time the British government planned to mint commemorative 50-pence Brexit coins. The first attempt was made to coincide with the original March 29, 2019 exit date, but those plans were shelved after Brexit Day was pushed back to October 31, 2019. Leading up to the second attempt, The Royal Mint struck around one million coins before Brexit was once again postponed. Those coin were melted down and recycled after the delay. Following the decisive victory by Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party’s in the December general election of 2019, the path was finally cleared for Brexit – and for these coins!
