The First Armored Dinosaur is the Last Coin Great Britain’s Dinosauria Collection

Discovered by Dr. Gideon Mantell in 1833, Hylaeosaurus was the first armored dinosaur ever found. A prolific British paleontologist, Mantell discovered four of the five genera of dinosaurs known during his time. When Mantell fell on hard times, however, his discoveries were acquired by the British Museum, where anatomist Richard Owen was able to study the specimen in depth, leading him to conclude it was part of a previously unknown group of giant reptiles that he called “Dinosauria.” Nearly 50 feet long, Hylaeosaurus was likely a solitary creature that lived during the Early Cretaceous period 140 to 133 million years ago. As one of three dinosaurs studied by Owen, It’s only fitting that this creature is depicted on the third and final release in an epic dinosaur-themed series from Great Britain’s Royal Mint

Released in collaboration with the National History Museum, the series is called “The Dinosauria Collection” after the term created by Owen in 1842 to refer to this prehistoric species of animals. Owen created the term out of the Greek words deinos, meaning “terrible” or “fearfully great,” and sauros, meaning “lizard” or “reptile” to represent the study of these creatures. Each design in the series will feature images created with guidance of the National History Museum for a more accurate depiction than previously seen on other coins. This Hylaeosaurus, for example, is shown with upward-pointing spikes on its tail based on the creature’s fragmentary remains and the anatomy of closely related species. The coin also features the words HYLAEOSAURUS and MANTELL 1833.
