Unique “Frieze of American History” Set Celebrates Mayflower’s 400th Anniversary

Head over to the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Are you there? Great. Now step into the Rotunda and look up. That beautiful painted panorama that’s encircling the bottom of the dome is the Frieze of American History (a frieze is a band or strip of decoration, usually sculpted or painted). The tallest part of the Capitol, it has been described as the building’s “symbolic and physical heart.” Its designs display significant events in American history by three artists: Constantino Brumidi, Filippo Costaggini and Allyn Cox.

Released in 2020 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower, this 19-piece set includes 18 Solomon Islands copper-nickel Half Dollars and one zinc medal. Each fan-shaped coin measures 45 x 35 mm and is an authentic replica of one part of the U.S. Capitol frieze, struck in High Relief and shaped so that all 18 coins placed together create a perfect circle. From the Landing of Columbus to the Birth of Aviation, this set takes you on an exciting journey through the annals of our nation’s history. And in the center sits the journey that started it all — the zinc medal dedicated to the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World, carrying with it the promise of a new nation.
