2020 Tokelau $5 1-oz Silver Icon Proof-Like Coin
The First Release In An “Iconic” Series
Tall, beautiful, and youthful, the Goddess Diana is frequently portrayed with a bow and a quiver of arrows resulting in some people confusing her with Diana Prince, AKA Wonder Woman, the DC Comics superhero. But the real goddess is a woodland deity associated with domestic animals and fertility, making her especially important to the women of the ancient world. And now she is the star of the first release in a new series of coins from the prestigious Pressburg Mint.
A Design Based On An Iconic Sculpture
Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, this $5 legal-tender coin is the inaugural release in the “Icon” series. It features a stunning depiction of Dana as sculpted by Hiram Powers in 1853. The sculpture is a bust of the beautiful goddess and was based on one of Powers’ earlier pieces titled “America.” Commissioned by Lucius Manlius Sargent, a member of Boston’s prominent Sargent family, the piece was eventually lost. It was eventually more thana century later discovered in an antique shop in Portugal. Today it resides in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Issued on behalf of Tokelau, a remote group of atolls in the South Pacific located hallway between New Zealand and Hawaii, this wonderful coin more than lives up to its place in the Icon series. In fact, even though this wasn’t struck as a proof, this coin’s brilliant and reflective finish has earned it a Proof-Like (PL) designation, meaning it has been struck in such a way that it exhibits mirror surfaces, much like a proof coin. Plus, it has also been specially engraved so that when it’s held at different angles, the word “ICON” can be seen!
Just 30,000 of these beautiful coins have been struck for worldwide release. Add this “iconic” piece to your collection today by clicking one — or several— of these coins to your cart right now!
