The First Of The First: One-Ounce Gold Eagles From The U.S. Mint's First Monster Box Of Type 2 Coins
Imagine if you were working at the U.S. Mint sometime in mid-2021. The presses had stopped running while new dies were secured in place to strike the brand new One-Ounce Type 2 Gold Eagles. The sound of the machinery started up and you were tasked with filling up the very first 500-coin "Monster Box" of these popular gold coins. It must have been an incredible feeling to touch those coins! Now, you, too, can touch those "First of the First" coins thanks to this extremely limited opportunity that can place a $50 One-Ounce Gold Type 2 Gold Eagle from that very first Monster Box into the palm of your hands!
A Golden, Once-In-A-Lifetime Opportunity To Own One Of The Very First T-2 Gold Eagles!
Let's put this opportunity in perspective. Since the U.S. Mint began striking $50 Gold Eagles in 1986, it has packed more than 40,000 Monster Boxes for distribution–meaning that this lone, first-ever box represents just .075% of ALL one-ounce Type 2 Gold Eagles struck in 2021 and less than .0025% of the entire 35-year mintage from 1986 to 2021! That's a miniscule fraction of a fraction! The first Monster Box serial numbered #550001 was set aside at the U.S. Mint by U.S. Mint Director David J. Ryder for future promotions. We feel fortunate to have been able to source these rare collectible gold eagles from the very first Type 2 Monster Box and this is the very first time they've been offered to collectors. These coins–and remember, there are only 500 of them–represent a whole new chapter in the Gold Eagle program, a program that helped make American coins among the most popular and coveted coins in the entire world!
Ryder's Foresight Creates Huge Demand Among Collectors
The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 authorized the American Eagle Gold coin and mandated that Liberty be represented on the obverse design and an Eagle motif on the reverse. However, the Mint Act of 1890 permits American coin designs to be changed every 25 years. So, during his second tenure as Mint Director from 2018 to 2021, Ryder sought the approval of then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to replace the Gold Eagle's reverse design with a fiercer depiction of our national bird while leaving in place the famous Augustus Saint-Gaudens image of Liberty on the reverse. And, thanks to Ryder's foresight, he also took measures to single out key portions of the year's mintage just for discriminating collectors who can recognize the value of "first" and "last" issues.
Ultimately, the Mint struck 456,500 Type 1 $50 Gold Eagles in 2021 and 665,500 Type 2 $50 Gold Eagles. These coins represent a rare opportunity to purchase a "first" and a "last" issue of America's favorite coin in the same year when the design changed for the first time in its 35-year history. As one might expect, demand for both coins was off the charts as old and new collectors desperately sought to get their own piece of the historic moment!
First Day Of Production For The First Ever Type 2 $50 Gold Eagles
In addition to the first-of-the-first opportunity that the coins available here represent, each has also been certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in near-perfect Uncirculated Mint State-69 (MS69) condition, a distinction that means these almost-flawless coins showcase impressive full strikes and indistinguishable imperfections–well above and beyond the quality of the vast majority of coins in the series. In addition, each has been sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic holder and encapsulated with a special label that bears a "First Day of Production" designation as well as a further "First T-2 Box (550001)" accreditation. Only 302 of the coins from that first 500-coin Monster Box achieved a perfect MS69 grade while 195 were graded in near-perfect MS69 condition, and three were graded in Gem Brilliant Uncirculated condition. This represents the first time that a third-party grading service has ever designated a U.S. coin with a First Day of Production designation!
Signed, Sealed And Delivered
What's more, each coin available here includes not one, but TWO signatures from a pair of coin giants. The label that appears on the front of the NGC holder was personally signed by Jennie Norris, the Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist who created the new Eagle reverse design! The label displayed on the back of the holder includes the signature of David J. Ryder, the two-time Director of the U.S. Mint who served from 1992 to 1993 and from 2018 to 2021. Each coin will come beautifully housed in a mahogany wood box and will be accompanied by a signed letter from the Desk of David J. Ryder that explains his thoughts on the new designs and Eagle program. Among other things, he says, "We knew that it would be very special for collectors to be part of this occasion and connect them to the 35-year story of these coins."
