The Perth Mint has an outstanding reputation among collectors around the world. For all the acclaim for its silver coins, its oldest bullion series, the Gold Kangaroo, initially referred to as the Gold Nugget, is its marquis issue. The coin features different designs of the animal that symbolizes Australia throughout the world. Each new issue is highly anticipated. The coin is currently issued in five sizes, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, and 1 kg.

Each coin is struck from .9999 fine gold, the proverbial "gold standard" of purity for annual bullion coins. The coin's stunning designs and the Perth Mint's outstanding production quality make this coin a "must-have" for serious collectors.

History of the Gold Kangaroo Bullion Series

The Gold Kangaroo series began as the Australian Gold Nugget. From its debut in 1986-1989, the bullion coin was struck with a gold nugget design. The 1989 proof edition was the first to feature a kangaroo instead of the nugget, and the ensuing issues, bullion and proof, and all followed suit. Since then, the series has featured different designs of the marsupial. The coin has been issued in 1/20 oz throughout its history, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, ½ oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg sizes.

The coin is currently struck in five sizes, including 1 kg, one of the few gold bullion series to come in this size regularly. In 2011, the Perth Mint struck a one-ton coin, which set the record for the world's largest and most valuable gold coin.

2021 Australian Gold Kangaroo Designs

Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse. Jody Clark depicts the monarch facing right with her shoulders open to the holder. On her head is her Royal Diamond Diadem, the crown that she traditionally wears to Britain's State Opening of Parliament. The image is encircled by a rim frame in which there are three inscriptions. They read, "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," and the denomination of the respective sizes.

A kangaroo leans forward on the reverse. The design, created by Natasha Muhl, offers a good look at the creature's muscular legs as it balances itself on the ground with its arms. The name of the coin, "AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO," is inscribed at the top of the rim frame. Inscriptions on the bottom half of the frame note the coin's date, "2021," weight, "1 OZ," and purity, "9999 GOLD.".
