2021 Australian Silver Kangaroo Brilliant Uncirculated Coins

Save perhaps for the panda for China, perhaps no animal is as closely associated with a single country as the kangaroo is to Australia. It is fitting, then, that the Perth Mint would bring this creature to the world in stunning .9999 fine silver. The Australian Silver Kangaroo is the country’s answer to bullion coins mass-produced by other countries, such as the American Silver Eagle, the Canadian Maple Leaf, and the Austrian Philharmonic.

The coin bears the same designs every year and, unlike the Koala and Kookaburra series, does not have a mintage limit. Each piece bears a “P” mintmark. The coin should not be confused with the Royal Australian Mint’s version, which has different designs and limited mintages.

History of the Silver Kangaroo Series

The Perth Mint has produced an annual favorite for silver collectors, the Kookaburra, since 1990. In 2007, The Koala joined the mint’s list of annual releases. While both coins were highly acclaimed, they also had limited mintages, which limited the ability of some collectors to get their hands on them. Not wanting to tamper with either of those series, the mint introduced the Silver Kangaroo in 2015. While the inaugural issue had a mintage cap of 300,000 pieces, the coin has since been mass-produced, giving collectors plenty of opportunities to enjoy this beautiful series.

2021 Australian Silver Kangaroo Designs

The coin’s obverse features a right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by The British Royal Mint designer Jody Clark. The monarch has her shoulders open to the holder and wears her Royal Diamond Diadem and earrings, and a necklace. The image is encircled by an ornate rim frame that bears three inscriptions, the monarch’s name, “ELIZABETH II,” the name of the issuing country, “AUSTRALIA,” and the coin’s face value, “1 DOLLAR.”

On the reverse is a red kangaroo design by Stuart Devlin. The animal bounds against a backdrop of radiating lines that represent the sun. A rim frame with two sets of inscriptions encircles the image. At the top is the name of the coin, “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO,” and at the bottom are the date, “2021,” and weight and purity of the coin, “1 OZ 9999 SILVER.”
