2021 Silver Maple Leaf Brilliant Uncirculated Coins

The Silver Maple Leaf coin is one of Canada's most famous national symbols. The elegant simplicity of the Silver Maple Leaf is among its most appealing feature. The Silver Maple Leaf coin's elegance is far from the only significant advantage of the coin. Each piece is struck from .9999 fine silver, a higher standard of purity than just about any other silver bullion coin.

The coin's obverse features a right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, Canada's head of state. The image has appeared on the Silver Maple Leaf since 2004. Although the monarch wears earrings and a necklace, the portrait, which was designed by Susanna Blunt, shows her with neither a crown nor a tiara. This omission sets it apart from other monarch images that appear on coinage from different countries and territories. The monarch's name, "ELIZABETH II," arches over the image, while the coin's face value, "5 DOLLARS," and date, "2020," are inscribed below it.

Walter Ott's reverse design features a single sugar maple leaf. Although simple in concept, the design is executed in sufficient detail that brings the coin to life in the holder's hand. A small leaf with a micro-engraving of the last two digits of the date, "21," is included in the stem's right. The purity of the coin, "9999," is noted to the leaf's left and right. The name of the issuing country, "CANADA," is inscribed along the rim at the top. Inscriptions along the bottom half of the rim note the coin's weight in English and French, Canada's two official languages. Together, they read, "FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR."

History of the Silver Maple Leaf Series

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf debuted in 1988. For much of its first twenty years, the coin had mintages in the hundreds of thousands. Since 2006, the coin has grown in popularity, with millions struck every year. In 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced new security features, radial lines, and micro-engraving, which made this series among the most secure in the entire bullion market. Today, the coin is among the most popular thanks to this security and its simple beauty.
