U.S. Mint Uncirculated sets give collectors the chance to obtain coins that are generally struck for circulation issued in mint condition. These sets celebrate the designs of coins used regularly in commerce, which are often otherwise overlooked. The sets consist of two complete sets of coinage from both the Philadelphia Mint and the Denver Mint, the latter of which have “D” mint marks. Coins from each mint have included a penny, a nickel, a dime, a half dollar, a Native American dollar, and examples of Quarters issued each year. Historically, examples of the five America the Beautiful quarters released in a given year are also included. However, because of the end of the America the Beautiful Series, just a single America the Beautiful design remains to be released in 2021, which will honor the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Alabama.

History of the Series

The first Uncirculated Set was issued in 1947. Two sets were included so that collectors would be able to display both faces of the coins. In the 1960s, there was a shortage of coins that was blamed on collectors. Accordingly, Special Mint Sets were struck instead of Uncirculated Sets from 1965-1967. Collectors often get the Special Mint Sets for complete sets. In 1968, the sets returned with mint marks. Uncirculated sets were not issued in 1982 and 1983. From 2005-2010, the sets were struck with satin finishes. Since 2011, they have been struck with brilliant finishes.

2021 U.S. Mint Uncirculated Set Designs

The 2021 Uncirculated Set includes two Lincoln Cents, two Jefferson Nickels, two Roosevelt Dimes, two Kennedy Half Dollars, two 2021 Native American Dollars, two of the 56th and final America the Beautiful Quarters, and a notable addition this year, two 2021 Quarters featuring General George Washington Crossing the Delaware. Seven coins will be struck at the Denver Mint and will bear their D mint mark, and 7 will be struck at the Philadelphia Mint, all except for the Lincoln Cent will bear the "P" mint mark. The coins will arrive packaged in two mint specific themed folders.

The Lincoln Cent, the Jefferson Nickel, the Roosevelt Dime, the Washington Quarter, the Kennedy Half Dollar, and the Sacagawea Dollar have all historically born portraits of the person for whom they are named on the obverse. Sacagawea’s portrait also includes her son, Jean-Baptiste, whom she holds on her back. The reverses of the cent, nickel, dime, and half dollar bear the Lincoln Memorial, Monticello, a torch between two branches, and an adapted version of the Presidential Seal, respectively.

One of the quarters included in the 2021 Uncirculated set is the 56th and final issue in the America the Beautiful series. Alabama’s entry honors Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site. Two P-51 mustangs fly overhead as an airman puts on his flight cap in the foreground. The second quarter features a design that shows General George Washington crossing the Delaware River. Following tradition, the Sacagawea Dollar will bear a design that honors Native Americans. The 2021 edition will carry a one-year-only design celebrating their contributions to the U.S. military.
