Welcome to An Error-Filled Year of the Ox!

It’s rare for a mint as highly regarded as the Royal Australian Mint to make a mistake. But that’s exactly what happed during the striking of its 2021 Australia One-Ounce Silver Lunar Year of the Ox coin. Sometime during the production of this coin, a foreign object or substance got between either the die or the planchet during the striking of the coin and left an impression, or lack of normal detail. This is an error coin classified as an “obverse struck through” specimen and we’ve managed to secure a handful of these coins and we’re making them available on a first-come, first-served basis to out customers.

Symbolism of the Ox

Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% silver, this one-year-only release depicts an alert and powerful ox trotting along below a canopy of willow branches. The Chinese symbol for “Ox” is engraved above the ox beside the words YEAR OF THE OX along with the coin’s weight and metal purity. The coin’s obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by a circle comprised of the 12 animals of the Chinse zodiac.

Intriguing Chinese Imagery

The ox has been a tremendously important animal for agricultural in China since ancient times. In some Chinese folk tales, willow branches are effective at driving away ghosts and evil spirits. Not so much a good luck charm, they’re useful in preventing bad luck. Many people today also use willow branches to predict the weather. They place willow branches under the eaves of their homes: green wicker means they’re in store for a rainy day, and dry wicker predicts a sunny day.

A Nearly Flawless Coin from the Start of the Run

This $1 legal-tender 2021 Australia One-Ounce Silver Lunar Year of the Ox Coin has also been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) in near-perfect Uncirculated Mint State-69 (MS69) condition, a distinction that means your almost-flawless coin will showcase an impressive full strike and indistinguishable imperfections — well above and beyond the quality of the vast majority of coins in the series! In addition, NGC has also certified that your Silver Ox is a First Releases (FR) coin, a designation that means your coin was received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository within the first 30 days of its release. Collectors seek out these coins because they are produced with new dies and considered to have sharper strikes and deeper mirrors than those that are struck later.

Just 50,000 of these awesome coins will ever be struck for worldwide release — and who knows how many were released with this unique error variety. So, if you’re an Ox, know someone born during the year of the Ox, or just want to add a fabulous coin to your collection, then this is for you!
