The Last Great Aztec King

On the reverse you’ll find a depiction of Montezuma II, the former leader of the Aztec empire and the last emperor to serve for any length of time. Montezuma was the ninth Aztec emperor of Mexico, taking over for his uncle Ahuitzotl in 1502. Having captured Montezuma, Spanish invaders led by famed Conquistador Hernán Cortéz overthrew the empire in 1521, bringing an end to the last great native civilization of Mesoamerica.

Additional Aztec patterns and symbols surround the outer layer. Look down into the center of the coin and you’ll find an Aztec calendar. Also known as the tonalpohualli or “counting the days,” this calendar formed a 260-day cycle, and had been used since ancient times in Mesoamerica.

It’s a stunning three-dimensional effect that’s enhanced by the antiqued finish, and only 199 were authorized.
