Based On Designs First Used Nearly Two Centuries Ago

Then there’s the beautiful design showcased on the large coin measuring 45 mm diameter! The stunning reverse features a depiction of Queen Victoria as Una with a majestic lion striding beside her. With her outstretched right hand, Victoria (Una) holds a jeweled scepter, symbolic of the young Monarch leading her vast Empire. In her left arm she carries a cross-bearing orb. The obverse features a bust of Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II, designed by former Royal Mint designer Jody Clark, with his “JC” initials to the left.

The original Una & the Lion coin was a true work of art. Minted way back in 1839 during the reign of Queen Victoria, it depicted the young monarch as Una (Truth) the titular character in The Fairie Queene, an epic poem written by British author Edmund Spenser and first published in 1590. The design was meant to illustrate the ancient partnership of the monarch and her people.
