One of the Finest Designs in Numismatic History Can Be Yours!

Gorgeous, Remastered, Limited, Gold and Silver Gothic Crown Portrait Proofs

The Great Engravers Series
The Royal Mint (TRM) is paying homage to the career masterpieces of some the most talented coin creators in the Mint’s 1,100+-year history with a series entitled “The Great Engravers.” Modern striking techniques have been employed to breathe new life into the spectacular designs more than 200 years after the original coins were first struck, giving collectors a chance to have the world’s most sought-after coin designs in their collection. This release, the third in the series, is SOLD OUT at The Royal Mint!

William Wyon’s Much-Revered Original Gothic Crown Portrait
The Silver Gothic Crown featuring Queen Victoria was struck as a pattern coin in 1846 to pay homage to Victoria’s ascension to the throne and was issued as a legal tender coin in 1847. These coins are extremely popular among collectors, yet it’s unknown how few of the 8,000 coins struck in 1847 have survived. Silver specimens with an edge reading 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI SEPTIMO', ‘An Ornament and a Safeguard, Regnal Year Seven’, are among the rarest, and have sold recently for over $27,000 in an auction.

Renowned former Royal Mint Chief Engraver William Wyon—who held that position from 1828 until his death in 1851 and who has been heralded for designing at least 43 different English coins—designed and engraved Victoria in a much different styling than his previous depictions. Here he portrayed The Queen in a medieval style, wearing a dress embroidered with roses representing England, thistles representing Scotland, and Shamrocks representing Ireland. A notable aspect of the design is the ornate crown she wears, St Edward’s Crown, which had not been used since medieval times, and was restored for Victoria’s ancestor, Charles II, who was the last monarch to have appeared crowned on coinage at the time.

The Stunning Design Remastered
This third Great Engravers series release features a reverse with a skillfully remastered image of Wyon’s Gothic Crown Portrait that was accomplished using an original Gothic Crown Coin held in The Royal Mint’s archives. The Royal Mint’s craftsmen enhanced the detail of the original design and removed historical blemishes, resulting in a beautiful tribute to the original, with improved quality.

The obverse features the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by former Royal Mint designer Jody Clark.
Clark is most famous for creating the current coinage portrait of Her Majesty The Queen that was released on UK coins in 2015. He has a number of other coin designs to his name, including his 2014 interpretation of Britannia and a series of ten designs for The Queen's Beasts Collection.

Premium Proofs Offer the Best Quality and a Higher Degree of Scarcity
Proofs like these are struck to a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than circulated and uncirculated coins. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice, unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While regular coins are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, proofs are individually struck by highly-skilled artisans who are creating numismatic masterpieces. Collectors love proofs because they’re the best quality, and also because of their relative scarcity since proof mintages are typically only a fraction as large as non-proof coins.

Struck in 99.99% Gold and 99.9% Silver
These legal-tender Gothic Crown Portrait Proofs are available struck in high-purity 99.99% pure gold in five-ounce and two-ounce weights (£500 and £200 British legal tender respectively) and struck in 99.9% fine silver in five-ounce and two-ounce weights (£1,000, £10 and £5 British legal tender respectively).

Certified Perfect with Special Pedigrees
Collectors only want the best of the best for their collections, and that’s what you’ve got here. You can secure these Gothic Crown Portrait Proofs certified by NGC as flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC) condition. Coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a top 70 grade representing perfection, even under magnification. The Ultra Cameo (UC) designation means these coins possess an intense frosted finish on both sides of the coin, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements.

In addition to being flawless and Ultra Cameo, your coins will arrive NGC-certified with a First Releases pedigree—which means these coins have been received for grading within 30 days of release from the mint.

Limited Availability
Authorized worldwide mintages for each of these Gold and Silver Gothic Crowns are very limited, ranging from a “high” of 4,256 pieces struck in two ounces of fine silver, to just 181 pieces struck in five-ounce of pure gold. That’s the total for worldwide release. Reducing the population further, the Proofs here are perfect, Ultra Cameo, with a First Releases pedigree.
