O’Neil was a former Negro Leagues player and manager who was also the first Black coach in Major League history and helped create the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Fowler became the earliest known African-American player in professional baseball when he suited up for an all-white professional team based out of New Castle, Pennsylvania in 1872. To celebrate these men and all the other pioneers in equality, the United States Mint has released a series of clad, silver and gold commemorative coins that pay tribute to the legacy of the old Negro Baseball Leagues.
