This remarkable coin shows the formidable 32-gun frigate sailing forward to battle against the larger French frigate La Gloire in a classic naval battle that took place on April 10, 1795, in the English Channel. At the time, Astrea was commanded by Captain Lord Henry Paulet, and she carried a crew of 212 men, whereas La Gloire carried a crew of 280 men. The first shot was fired at sunset and the French frigate didn’t strike her colors until just before midnight. At one point during the long and severe battle the two ships exchanged broadsides for 58 minutes under a thick blanket of fog in what could have been a scene right out of a Hollywood movie!
