The Canadian Peace Dollar Like You’ve Never Seen It Before!

Two Countries, Two Peace Dollars
It was 1921 when the renowned Peace Dollar (1921-1928, 1934-1935) made its first appearance in the United States. With a design created by Anthony de Francisci, the coin was originally intended as a commemorative to celebrate the restoration of peace following the end of World War I. Its design proved to be so popular, it was instead put into circulation, succeeding the American Morgan Silver Dollar.

In 2020, Canada issued a Peace Dollar of its own using retired Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) Senior Engraver Susan Taylor’s reverse design for Canada’s 2019 Peace and Liberty Medal, which honored the sacrifices made by veterans of both the U.S. and Canada. That medal was a collaboration with John Mercanti, 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, who designed the obverse. In creating the design for the medal, Susan echoed de Francisci’s design for the American Peace Dollar, saying she was inspired by the way that it “evoked a clear and elegant message of not only peace but also of harmony and grace.”

The Canadian Peace Dollar Was a Big Hit!
The first 2020 Canadian Peace Dollars were struck in one-ounce silver and one-ounce gold, with an ultra-high relief (UHR) design and a traditional proof finish. The Mint sold out fast. The following year, for the 2021 issue, the coin featured a reverse proof finish. It was met with the same sold-out success.

Now in 2022, Something New and Remarkable
Continuing the sophisticated design trends of the first two releases, the 2022 Canada Peace Dollar goes to another level entirely with a “pulsating” design that creates an astonishing effect that must be seen to be believed! Not only that, but for the first time ever, the RCM added a Canada Peace Dollar struck in five ounces of silver to accompany the one-ounce gold and one-ounce silver versions, all with the pulsating design.

Creating the Incredible Pulsating Effect
These coins were struck by the mint using state-of-the-art, “pulsating” technology. This minting technology allows hundreds of micro-engineered, precision-engraved, sub-millimeter-scale surfaces to be struck into the fields of these coins. When combined with the polished dies and intense pressure needed to produce a UHR coin, these hundreds of surfaces turn into tiny mirrors reflecting light in all directions. It’s a gorgeous, visually breathtaking effect when simply viewed straight on, but the “pulsating” effect comes to life when the coin is rotated. This is the first time this technology has been used on the fields of a coin. Additionally, the five-ounce silver size uses a much larger pattern and includes its own, unique laser etched pattern on the obverse

Stunning Ultra-High Relief, and How It Came About
You may remember that the first American Peace Dollar was struck in high relief, but the design lasted only a very short time because it created issues for bankers who couldn’t stack the coins, and issues for the mint, which kept breaking dies due to the difficult strike. There are no such issues with this 2022 Canada Peace Dollar. In fact, it’s not just high relief, it’s ultra-high relief. The eye-opening reverse design projects over 1.3 mm off the coin’s surface.

When the Royal Canadian Mint hired the retired engraver/designer in 2018, a part of their decision was based on Susan’s expertise in sculpting meticulous, three-dimensional portraits. Susan created this Peace design to be ultra-high relief from the ground up. Once completed, this artwork was transitioned from its digital format to hardened steel dies using state-of-the-art die cutting techniques intended to precisely preserve the detail and dimension of the original model. To achieve the ultra-high relief, planchets were struck numerous times under tremendous – yet precise – pressure. The result is highly-detailed, and exquisite!

Gorgeous Proof Finish
Collectors love proofs because they’re the best of the best quality, and because they’re minted in far fewer numbers. Though struck from the same high-purity gold and silver as regular Peace Dollars, these proofs have a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice, unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirrored fields.

Striking UHR coins with a proof finish offers a significant challenge to the mint technicians because the tremendous pressure required to strike a high relief design, or in this case, an ultra-high relief design, makes achieving the flat, perfectly polished fields expected on proof coins nearly impossible. That process was especially complicated on this release, given that the RCM had the added task of striking the pulsating effect onto the fields of the reverse. Despite the challenges, RCM mint technicians were up to the task, providing these coins with a finish as beautiful as on any proof coin!

Struck in High-Purity Gold and Silver
These Pulsating Peace Coins are struck in one ounce of high-purity 99.999% pure gold ($200 Canada legal tender), five ounces of 99.99% of fine silver ($50 Canada legal tender) or one ounce of 99.99% fine silver ($1 Canada legal tender). Each of these coins is also available as part of a 3-Pc. Set.

Certified by NGC as Flawless…
Proofs and coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. There is no higher grade. These proofs have been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the top coin-grading services in the world, as perfect Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC), a designation given to flawless coins that possess an intense frosted finish on both sides, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements.

…with the Most Sought-After Pedigrees
Not only are they perfect, these proofs have also been certified by NGC as First Day of Issue (FDI), meaning they were struck before the official release date, or as First Day of Production (FDP), which means they have been shown to have been struck on the first day the mint began production. FDI and FDP proofs are desired because they are fresh and sharp, and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.

These are not only the best of the best, they’re also the first of the best.

Exclusive Susan Taylor Hand-Signed Signature Labels
These coins are encapsulated with exclusive Peace labels hand-signed by designer Susan Taylor, who served the RCM as an engraver, sculptor and senior engraver for 33 years before her retirement.
