These South Dakota Goldbacks Will Put Some Gold Back In Your Collection

There’s a voluntary unit of local currency that exists in South Dakota called “Goldbacks,” 24-karat gold foil notes that are crafted in increments of 1/1000th of an ounce of highly pure 99.9% gold. Though not officially recognized by the United States government as legal tender, many local merchants and vendors are already accepting this new form if currency as payment. What’s more, they can be accepted in other states that allow the usage of these intriguing and beautifully designed notes.

Wafer-Thin Gold Foil Currency Notes

Each wafer-thin note is coated with a protective plastic cover so it can be circulated, exchanged and used without the gold tearing. They’re meant to be used just like cash to purchase items. If you travel through South Dakota, you’ll probably even see signs that say “Goldbacks Accepted Here” to let you know these fractional gold units can be spent just like any other form of legal-tender currency. Anyone can own Goldbacks, even if they aren’t a resident of South Dakota.

Representations Of Allegorical Figures

Not only is each Goldback crafted in increments of 1/1000th of an ounce of pure gold (1 Aurum), but they are also fabulous examples of the engraver’s art—and the larger the denomination, the bigger the note. The design on each denomination features an allegorical depiction of one of the lady virtues and combines her with distinct symbols representing different aspects of South Dakota history and culture.

The 10 Aurum 1/100th-oz gold note offered here includes wording that says, “Specie Legal Tender Instrument” and features a design that shows the allegorical figure of Lady Harmonia—the goddess of Harmony from Greek mythology. She is depicted about to fire an arrow from her bow while surrounded by collection of animals such as a dog, a deer, and a pair of Ring-Necked Pheasants, the official state bird of South Dakota. Above her fly a trio of Canadian snow geese with a crescent moon in the background. South Dakota is recognized nationally as a waterfowl-hunting destination. This design of Harmonia combines elements of Artemis, the goddess of wild animals, the hunt, and the moon. She is the huntress of the Greek gods and is usually depicted holding a bow and arrow beneath a crescent moon along with a stag, her most sacred animal.
