We sat down with David Ryder to talk about bringing back the Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar series after 100 years.
David J. Ryder served as the 34th U.S. Mint Director from September 1992 to November 1993, through a recess appointment by President George H.W. Bush that continued into the administration of Bill Clinton. In 2018 he was nominated by President Donald Trump and approved by the Senate to become the 39th Director of the United States Mint.
“The Morgan Dollar is more than a coin; it’s a piece of living history. Crafted by the genius George T. Morgan, it’s a symbol of the untamed Old West and 19th-century expansion. With Liberty and an imposing eagle gracing its design, this coin held the nation’s story in its gleaming silver.
From 1878 to 1904, the Morgan Dollar circulated, capturing the essence of an era. But what truly made this opportunity special is its remarkable return in 1921. The 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act was a pivotal moment in numismatic history and granted the Mint authority to issue additional Morgan and Peace dollars dated 2021 and beyond as an ongoing series.
Returning for my second stint as Mint Director at the U.S. Mint in 2018 as the 39th Mint Director, I embarked on a mission. My goal was clear: to bring back the coins cherished by collectors and strike over a million new silver dollars. This mission involved restoring a legacy through the application of cutting-edge technology to ensure these coins recapture their former glory. Not just bringing back coins; restoring a legacy. Using cutting-edge technology, they’re ensuring these coins are as breathtaking as they were in their heyday.
And what’s even more compelling? Collectors, both seasoned and newcomers, embraced this unique occasion. The Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar are a testament to American heritage and owning them is owning a piece of history.”
