Modern, Legal-Tender Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars Are Back for 2023!
In 2021, the U.S. Mint thrilled collectors worldwide when they revived the beloved Morgan and Peace Dollar series, marking the 100th anniversary since the last Morgan and first Peace Dollar were issued in 1921. They were a major hit, selling out almost instantly from the mint and continuing to be in high demand on the secondary market to this day!
While initially, collectors were anticipating modern Peace and Morgans to return in 2022, due to a shortage of silver blanks, no coins were issued in 2022. But they’re back in 2023!
Vintage Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars
The Morgan Silver Dollar and the Peace Silver Dollar are among the most collected vintage coins ever! That's in part because of their exceptional, iconic designs and in part because of the role they played during exciting, turbulent, significant periods of American history. The Morgan Silver Dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904—then again in 1921—and is known as the Silver Dollar that helped build the Old West. The first Peace Silver Dollar, with its design signifying the nation's hope for peace and prosperity after the end of World War I, was struck in 1921, marking the first and only time two circulating silver dollars with different designs were released in the same year. The Peace Dollar was minted through 1928, then again in 1934 and 1935.
2021 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars: Honoring the 100th Anniversary
If you're a coin collector, you probably remember that the U.S. Mint brought the Morgan Silver Dollar and the Peace Silver Dollar back in 2021 to honor the 100-year anniversaries of the last minting of the Morgan and the first minting of the Peace. The same size as the originals, these modern versions were the first legal-tender Morgan and Peace Dollars in 100 years! They were spectacularly gorgeous, created with modern technology and historical U.S. Mint assets that showcased their original, timeless designs with even more clarity!
The releases were a massive success, with instant sell-outs on the U.S. Mint's website. Plus, with so many collectors left disappointed following the 2021 release, the secondary market has continued to see demand for those first year of issue coins, even in 2023.
The 2021 coins were authorized by the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, signed into law by former President Donald Trump on January 5, 2021, requiring "the Department of the Treasury to mint and issue coins in honor of the 100th anniversary of the completion of coinage of the Morgan dollar and the 100th anniversary of the commencement of coinage of the Peace dollar."
Back After a Year's Hiatus: 2023 Morgan Silver Dollars and 2023 Peace Dollars
While some collectors were disappointed, they weren't able to secure the 2021 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars due to how quickly the limited mintages were snapped up, last year ALL collectors were disappointed because—though the release of both coins was intended to be an annual event—the U.S. Mint was caught off-guard by the global shortage of the silver blanks required to strike the coins, and canceled the release.
However, in 2023 the U.S. Mint is again able to issue 2023 Morgan and Peace Dollars to the delight of collectors around the world. Not only will Uncirculated Silver Dollars be issued, but also the very first proof releases in the modern .999 fine series. If that’s not enough, collectors were also treated to reverse proof versions later in the year with a limited mintage 2-coin set, which marks the first time either Silver Dollar has ever been struck with a reverse proof finish!

In addition to the second year of issue Uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollars, collectors were treated to the very first proof issues in the modern .999 fine Peace and Morgan Dollar series. These Proofs also mark the very first time that the historic San Francisco Mint has EVER struck either Silver Dollar with a proof finish for collectors!

These 2023-S Reverse Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars were issued in limited mintage 2-piece sets on November 9th, 2023. Each will be struck at the San Francisco Mint with a reverse proof finish, complete with the frosted backgrounds and mirrored design details so beloved by collectors.
2023 Morgan and Peace Dollars Are Struck in 99.9% Fine Silver
Unlike the vintage originals, which were struck in .90 silver and .10 copper, the 2023 Morgan Silver Dollars and Peace Silver Dollars are struck in .999 fine silver.

Meanwhile, the proof versions of the 2023 Morgan and Silver Dollars, struck at the San Francisco Mint, will each have a maximum mintage of 400,000 coins.
The reverse proof versions of the 2023 Morgan and Silver Dollars, struck at the San Francisco Mint, will be issued in a set that has a maximum mintage of 250,000.
