The Legacy Of Abraham Lincoln's Presidency

During his presidency, Lincoln was credited with successfully waging a political struggle and civil war that preserved the Union, ended slavery, and created the possibility of civil and social freedom for African-Americans. A self-taught lawyer, legislator, and vocal opponent of slavery from Illinois, Lincoln was elected 16th President of the United States in November of 1860—an event that hastened the start of the Civil War in 1861. The Union's euphoria of victory in the war came to a sudden halt on the night of April 14, 1865, when President Lincoln was shot by actor and Southern sympathizer James Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Besides featuring the bust of Lincoln on its obverse, the medal's reverse features the inauguration dates of his two terms—"MARCH 4, 1861" and "MARCH 4, 1865"—and the date of his assassination—"APRIL 14, 1865."
