The Slave Who Led A Revolt That Nearly Toppled Rome
The 1960 film Spartacus starring Kirk Douglas dramatizes the life of the real Spartacus, a gladiator who led a slave revolt against Rome. The iconic "I am Spartacus" scene at the end of the film where his troops each claim to be him to protect the real Spartacus, symbolizes unity and sacrifice in the face of tyranny. This moment has become legendary, capturing the spirit of resistance and selflessness that defined Spartacus and his rebellion against Roman oppression. For this the real Spartacus has earned a place here as part of the "Legendary Warriors" coin series!
Released on behalf of Niue, a small island nation in the South Pacific Ocean, this exciting collectible really brings the story of Spartacus to life! It depicts Spartacus in a gladiatorial battle armed with a spear, sword, helmet and an ornate balteus wrapped around his waist–all selectively gilded in gold! The coin's amazing High Relief (HR) designs add an unsurpassed level of detail to the exciting design. Plus, the coin has been given a unique antique finish that adds even more depth to the already action-packed image. Antique finishes like this are typically applied by hand, a feature that means no two of these coins are exactly alike!
A Lasting Symbol Of Resistance Against Oppression
Born around 111 BC in Thrace, Spartacus was a former soldier captured by the Romans and sold into slavery. Trained as a gladiator, he escaped with fellow gladiators and quickly became a skilled leader. During the Third Servile War (73– 71 BC), Spartacus led a growing army of escaped slaves, defeating Roman legions and advancing through Italy. Despite their early victories, his army was eventually cornered by Roman forces under Crassus in 71 BC. Spartacus was killed in battle, and many of his followers were slaughtered or captured. Despite his defeat, Spartacus became a lasting symbol of resistance against oppression. His rebellion inspired later movements for freedom and equality, solidifying his place in history as an enduring hero in the fight for justice and liberty.
