For centuries, the contributions of women have been relegated to mere footnotes in world history. That has changed over the last several decades, however, and today textbooks that once paid little attention to their accomplishments now include full discussions of major topics and viewpoints in women’s history. Women are also getting their due thanks to the United States Mint in its American Women Quarters Series. A four-year program that began in 2022, the Mint is releasing five new quarter designs each year from 2022 to 2025 celebrating some of the most important and influential women in American history. And now the 2024 edition is here!
A Diverse Group Of Prominent American Women
These quarters honor a broad and diverse group of prominent American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, government, humanities, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds. The five women honored in 2024 include:

Captured by Confederates in April of 1864, she was accused of being a spy and was imprisoned for four months.
- CELIA CRUZ. Known as Celia Cruz, Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso (1925–2003) was a staple in Latin Music. Known internationally as the “Queen of Salsa,” she won 5 Grammy Awards. Zitkala-Ša (1876–1938) was a Yankton Dakota writer, editor, translator, musician, educator, and political activist who fought for women’s suffrage and Indigenous voting rights in the early 20th century. Her writings and activism led to citizenship and voting rights for not only women, but all Indigenous people.
Laura Gardin Fraser’s Beloved Washington Design
In addition to the one-year-only designs, this series features a new obverse design by American sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser that features a portrait of George Washington facing right, surrounded by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2024.” Fraser originally created this design in 1931 as her entry in the competition for the 1932 Washington Quarter that was struck to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. Her design was recommended by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, but John Flannigan’s left-facing Washington design was ultimately selected. Fraser’s obverse design was later used in 1999 on the George Washington Commemorative Gold $5 Coin.
