2024-W Gold Buffalo Proofs in Perfect Condition with Hand-Signed Labels
These beautiful coins are not only minted in high-purity 99.99% pure gold and struck with a shimmering proof finish by the artisans at the West Point Mint, they also feature recreated American classic designs from James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel masterpiece, struck from 1913 to 1938.
The obverse recreates what was the first time an Indian head design accurately portrayed a male Native American, with a composite profile of three Native American Chiefs—Iron Tail of the Sioux, Two Moons of the Cheyenne and John Big Tree of the Seneca nation. The reverse features a standing bison which is believed to be modeled after “Black Diamond”, a buffalo born in New York’s Central Park Zoo of stock donated by Barnum and Bailey.
U.S. Gold Buffaloes were first minted in 2006, becoming the very first 99.99% (24 karat) pure gold coins struck by the U.S. Mint. Each year, they are minted in both bullion and collectible proof versions. For 2008, the U.S. Mint offered fractional proof coins as well as the one-ounce coins that are minted every year.
Struck in 99.99% Pure Gold
Unlike U.S. Gold Eagles (which are struck to 91.67% fineness), these $50 legal-tender U.S. Gold Buffalo Proofs are struck in one ounce of high-purity 99.99% pure gold.
Why Do Collectors Prefer Proofs?
Collectors want proofs because they have a higher degree of scarcity than non-proof coins. They are struck to a much greater standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than non-proof coins, which makes their minting process more time-consuming. Proofs are minted using special proof planchets (blanks) that have been treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, that are fed into presses fitted with polished dies and struck two or more times, unlike regular coins which are struck only once, to give them a glamorous shine, and to make the intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields.
On a good day, proof coins can be produced at a rate of 50 to 100 an hour. Bullion coins, on the other hand, can be produced at up to 750 coins per minute. In 2023, the U.S. Mint produced 394,000 Gold Buffaloes in uncirculated condition and just 14,007 with a proof finish—under 3.6%.
