For 2021, the Mint debuted the world’s first-ever Super Incuse Gold and Silver Maples, where the incuse strike sank down 1.5 mm into the surface of the coin, creating a steep, canyon-like difference in depth that was 5 times deeper than the incuse strike seen previously—so deep in fact that even after the RCM switched to thicker planchets, the strike still nearly touched the center of the coin, stopping just shy at 40% of the coin’s thickness.

Honoring the Late Queen Elizabeth II for the Last Time on Maple Leaf Coins

Due to a quirk of the RCM’s transition to the new King Charles III effigy, these 2024 Super Incuse Maples will be the only Walter Ott designed maples issued by the RCM with the late Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy in 2024. This exclusive effigy was designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003. Here the transitional version of the classic effigy includes the first and last dates of the Queen’s reign, separated by four small circles representing the four effigies used prior.
